Hofbräu München: The beginning
The start of one of Munich’s oldest beer halls could almost be seen as the stories that legends are made of.
In the case of Hofbräu, it was a quest for quality.
Over 400 years ago, William V, Duke of Bavaria, saw the need to improve the beer brewed in his court in Munich.
He felt that the taste and quality were lacking, and founded Hofbräuhaus in 1589 in Munich.
Hofbräuhaus, however, was destined to provide its incredible beers beyond the court, with King Ludwig I of Bavaria opening the brewery to the public in 1828.
Together with the brewery growing in popularity, it also became a popular gathering place for several historic events.
The Munich Communist Government headquarters found their home here at Hofbräuhaus in 1919, and in the following year, the first meeting between Hitler and the National Socialist Party was held in the Festsaal.
Although the brewery suffered damage from World War II bombings, restorations allowed it to reopen in 1958.
Today, Hofbräu München is still going strong, producing high-quality Bavarian beers in a classic style.
